Shotcrete - Gas Vapour Intrusion Protection Pt2

This is the 2nd photo of a 3 part series in which RIX completes a project to rehabilitate a site that previously contained a service station. The soil is severely contaminated with Hydrocarbons. RIX partnered with our client in designing a solution that employed shotcrete and a gas vapour membrane to protect end users from toxic gases contained in the contaminated soil.

The first application of shotcrete seen in part 1 of this series has now had the membrane painted on and the steel added in preparation for the final layer of shotcrete to complete the protective shotcrete sandwich.

RIX recently took part in a project to rehabilitate a site that previously contained a service station. This site presented some interesting challenges as the soil was severely contaminated with Hydrocarbons. RIX partnered with the client in designing a solution that employed shotcrete and a gas vapour membrane to protect end users of the structure from any intrusion of toxic gases contained in the contaminated soil.

Seen here in this picture is the smooth (trowel finish) blinding layer of shotcrete. The gas vapour membrane will be applied to this smooth shotcrete surface and then sandwiched between the final layer of shotcrete which will form the walls of the underground carpark.

RIX Install New Guard Rail Design Pt1

RIX have been invited by a Local City Council to install an innovative new Road Guardrail System. Recently a truck crashed into the Guardrailing severely damaging approximately 50m of rail. This has left passing traffic unprotected from the 20m drop into the water of the bay below.
In the video you can see our specially designed excavator mounted drill mast, drilling the 65mm diameter holes through the rail and back under the road. The 24mm x 3m rockbolts will be installed through the custom built Double Posts of the Guardrail and grouted into the drill holes. The bolts have been designed to provide the posts with support in the incompetent ground, present onsite. It is important to note that the rock bolts have been fabricated with ductile steel as opposed to high tensile steel, this is to combat shock loading which will inevitably occur in the event of another vehicle hitting the rail.

RIX Design & Build Custom Rock Drilling Rig Pt1

RIX were recently invited by our Client to complete works on the Jindabyne Dam Spillway. The project is part of the "Water For Rivers Program", which will restore environmental flows to the water starved Snowy River. The river originates from a height of 2.2km on the slopes of Mount Kosciuszko, Australia's highest mainland peak, draining the eastern slopes of the Snowy Mountains in New South Wales, before flowing through the Snowy River National Park in Victoria and emptying into Bass Strait 350km later.

RIX originally began works on the spillway in 2004 and were happy to return to install the final rockbolts and shotcrete.
Seen here is RIX's custom engineered Drilling Basket. This enabled us to drill the 100mm diameter,12m deep rockbolts into the granite surrounding the Spillway.

Road Work - Shotcrete and Soil Nail Embankment Stabilisation

Hi All,

RIX were called by our client to remediate this batter which had recently failed North of Sydney.
The slip was remediated with a Soil Nail Shotcrete Batter.
The works required removal of vegetation and loose rock(scaling). RIX drilling plant then drilled 125mm holes into the strata for 40 Soil Nails @ 5m x 20mm, 50mm diameter holes were also drilled into the rock shelf for 30 rockbolts @ 6m x 25mm diameter. 350m2 of shotcrete was also placed coloured to match the existing weathered rock.
Being a major road our Client asked the batter works be completed in 3 weeks...RIX were able to meet this deadline our Client is delighted with the works.

Rail Work - K2RQ

With the majority of this section of Soil Nail Wall at K2RQ complete, we are counting down the number of Soil Nails left to drill, grout and install before shotcreting.

Please take note of our flat consistent finish with its sharp an straight edges.

Our Clients have commented that our product is equal in aesthetics to a "Form Work" finish, but with considerable programme and budget benefits....

The RIX Group completing "Stage 1" of a recent cold and rainy project. The project entailed over 100m² de-vegetation and scaling of loose material, the installation of 50 x 3m soil nails, the installation of 160m² of SL41 galvanised mesh and the placement of 25m³ of 25MPa Shotcrete. "Stage 1" was completed in 18hrs.

Top Level - Shotcrete Complete

Well,

today was the day to cover roughly 20 x 4m horizontal drains, our 140 x 4.2m or so DCP bolts and our 3tonne of SL81 (approx.).

The spray was completed successfully and our nossle man Rod gave it a consistent uniform finish, no lumps or bumps.

James cut the tops gun barrel to the green line. Overall a fantastic gun finish result, the client is very happy with program and product.

10/09/10 - S.Nowra - Steel Fixing Commences

Hi All,

Steel fixing commenced today SL81 galvanised mesh. Vertical strip drains are placed @ 1m centres, connecting to 4m drilled horizontal drains @ 3m centres. There is substantial water flowing from the excavation.
In the photo below Jimmy is setting the mesh while the Client's Surveyor is marking face of shotcrete.

Hi All,

Drilling has almost finished on the top level..
As a great man once said "That rock, is harder than a bulls forehead!!!". Our Drilling Manager has been trialing new drilling configurations with great success. Rotary or percussion, hydraulics or air. We have found with this rock rotary is slower but easier on the gear.
Hope to commence steel fixing later this week.
